Pandit Bhimsen Joshi

Brilliant documentary on Pandit Bhimsen Joshi, the doyen of Hindustani Classic Music in India. It traces his history when he was a young kid to the various stages of development of music in him. There are scintillating live performances in the documentary including some of my favorite compositions of the Panditji, besides many ragas which Pandit has sung for the film. Panditji belonged to Kirana gharana of Hindustani classical music which had Smt. Gangubai Hangal as its famous exponent. Pandit stayed with Sawai Gandharwa in the guru shishya parampara and started organising the Sawai Gandharwa Music Festival in Pune in honour of his guru. Highly recommended viewing for all the connoisseurs of Hindustani music.

Ustad Amjad Ali Khan

This is a brilliant documentary on the legendary sarod maestro Ustad Amjad Ali Khan, very beautifully made by Gulzar the legendary poet. This is produced by the Films Division of the Government of India. Sarod is a stringed instrument mainly played in the Hindustani Classical style of music. Ustad Amjad Ali Khan comes from an illustrious lineage of musicians going back to several generations of musicians, all one great after another. They came from Kabul and played the Rubab which is a modified version of Sarod. The music that comes out of sarod is very beautiful and melliflous and since it blends with the classical ragas, it makes for great listening. His father Ustad Hafiz Ali Khan was also a great musician.
