Puzhu

Deadly Malayalam psycho crime thriller “Puzhu” (2022) directed by Ratheena and starring Mammootty, Parvathy Thiruvothu, among others.

Kuttan (Mammootty) is a retired police officer and a widower staying alone with his 7 year old son Kichu. He is a deadly paranoid person with consistent fear that somebody is out to kill him.

He has a sister Bharati (Parvathy Thirovothu) but she married a person of a lower caste and eloped with him. Kuttan belongs to the high ranking brahmin caste. He has estranged relationship with his sister and brother in law.

His hatred and paranoia makes him do strange things and suspect each and everybody with whom he had come into contact during his police days. He had once arrested a person of terrorist activities but their investigation led to nothing and that man died in prison.

His son Ameer silently plotted revenge and blind sided Kuttan. Kuttan in turn blind sides his sister and brother in law with his deadly act of revenge. Revenge begets revenge and in the end makes for a sad story.

Brilliant script with magnificent acting by Mammootty, the legend of Malayalam cinema. It never fails to surprise me that Malayalam cinema throws up such superb screenplay from time to time and not at all on the beaten track. Excellent direction by Ratheena for her directorial debut. Music by Jakes Beejoy is equally splendid. IMDB 6/10
